On August 16, 2019, in Afghanistan, U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Ryan Davis triggered an explosion while his team was conducting a raid. It was three hours before the medivac came to take him to the closest hospital. Due to the blast of the explosion, Davis underwent 28 life-saving surgeries, leaving him as a triple amputee, losing his right arm above the elbow, right leg above the knee, and left leg below the knee.
“I think I was born with a bit of gratitude for my country and the men who had served before me. The lifestyle of a warrior has always been a calling of mine.”
Ryan Davis stares out from under his baseball cap in midtown Savannah’s Hull Park one recent September morning. He answers questions about the night he nearly died: The explosion and torn limbs, the failed helicopter attempts to rescue him, his bleeding and suffocation.
A 33-year-old active duty man conducting combat operations in Afghanistan sustained a right-sided complex blast injury. The injury pattern included: massive soft tissue injury from right costal margin to right knee.
